Hello,

I'm hoping you can give me some info on the risks of a 4-mo. old baby refusing the breast following two weeks of formula feeding via bottle after mom has surgery for thyroid problem. The mother is opting for the surgery so that she may continue to breastfeed her baby. Initially she had no wishes to breastfeed and, of course, was told she could not breastfeed because of the thyroid medication.

Thanks to a great childbirth teacher, this woman decided to forego thyroid medication and nurse for three months. Now, she has decided to have the surgery instead of ceasing breastfeeding.

I am concerned that, given the reasons mom is having surgery (to continue bf), baby might refuse the breast after such a period of exclusive bottle feeding. I am trying to get info to her regarding cup feeding, etc., but wanted to have the real risks of baby refusing breast after all this.

Thanks,

Temple McLean, BCCE
