Katherine,

You're right!  I have seen no mention of breastfeeding as a prevention
for breast cancer.  Neither do I see breastfeeding as a prevention for
diabetes, osteoporosis or many other diseases.  I think it is up to us in
the breastfeeding community to contact the American Cancer Society,
Diabetes Society, et al.  They will never contact us.  I don't think they
are anti-breastfeeding, just one of those things that they might not want
to make too strong a statement.  Hopefully I'm wrong.  But let's start
some pr on the topic and approach these foundations.
