dear jan and all,

i privately emailed the first person but since this seems to be of general
interest, i will share the little information i have. i know a pediatric
allergist who has used breastmilk for years to treat severely allergic
children (guess what, usually not breastfed). also, here in denver a study
was done treating liver transplant patients with breastmilk to lessen
rejection, etc. and the milk bank itself finds that recipients that become
stabilized on breastmilk can then usually tolerate other foods if they have
(and here is the magic amount in all three cases) four to eight ounces per
day.

we can't figure out what this amount might be based on; the liver transplant
study didn't give any reasons for choosing that amount. the amount a sick
baby or child needs varies some based on health problems and size, of course.
but if you ask the milk bank here for an idea, they would suggest four to
eight ounces. since i am a mathematically illiterate american, i can't say
how much that is in liters or centimeters (i tend to think small, ml and
grams).

my feeling about recommending this is that you would decide based on
availability (how much milk can be spared?) and then an adjustment of the
dose based on results. i hope that if anyone else has stories about this,
they will publish.
