I also advise against removing a suckling newborn from the breast.  I echo
all of the reasons Carla gave, and add that in this heightnened learning period
"reward and punishment" principles support leaving an efficiently suckling
baby at her breast to reinforce this desired behavior.

You know that later in the teething period if a baby bites, the mother
removes her from the breast, offers again, and if she bites again is removed
for a longer time.  Soon the baby decides to desist in this action that
feels so good to her gums, because the beloved breast is removed. I surmise
that the newborn is programmed similarly, though not as "thoughtfull" as the
6-month-old.  I see much better learning when baby is allowed to continue
doing what she is doing WELL on one breast, then when she is ready for the
next breast she will not change her technique, as she was beautifully rewarded.
