Yes, we don't have a "regular nursery" anymore. We have a nicu and a observational nursery that's it. This is taught during every class we offer (baby care, breastfeeding, childbirth ed), our prenatal and sibling tours are shown the (hopefully empty) observational nursery. It is discussed by our Obs and midwives during prenatal visits. When our patients deliver we get them s2s as soon as possible and we make a big deal over how our transition nurse (what used to be the nsy admitting) nurse comes to you! How's that for room service? When mom has finished breastfeeding the transition nurse assesses the baby and will do the first bath with the parents. After she goes over general teaching..what's in the crib, feeding log etc. then she also talks about how our babies stay with their moms, I even say "You waited 9 months for this baby, we aren't going to separate you now" Generally it is well received, sometimes a baby will end up at the nurses desk at a mom's request but most stay in the room . Our hospital has a care partner program so dads/SO or grandma can stay over. Rooms were set up with better lighting and portable otoscopes are available so pedis see their patients in the rooms.

The nurses have even started to like it. It's now the norm.

So yes, get ready of the regular and all those unhappy crying babies
