Dear LacNets,
I again need help. My client has a baby that is 7 months of age. Has
been diagnosed with GERD. She also has allergies to soy, dairy, peanuts,
eggs and fish. After, some insistence from mom and myself she has been
referred to an allergist and a pediatric gastroenterologist. The baby is
taking compound Prevacid twice daily. Continues to nurse and some
solids. I have referred mom to our dietician, also was referred to the
Wic dietician with also some funds to be able to buy fresh fruits and
vegetables at our local farmer's market. My concerns are that this baby
is gaining but very slowly. We're talking 1/2-2 oz a week. This is the
first week that she has been able to hold feedings down. We then had a
heat wave and she wasn't eating only taking pedialyte for mom. Nursed
during the night though and is keeping it down. The next appointment she
has with the Pediatric Gastroenterologist is in July. I told her to be
insistent on asking what she can eat that will also help. The people I
spoke with have told me all that they did to help her but what I get
from her is that I am the only one helping her. My thinking is that
maybe she is having a hard time deciphering the material.
Any suggestions from you? I have a client that is taking culturelle
(lactobacillus GG). She took it during her pregnancy and plans on
continuing during lactation. It is suppose to help with allergens and
viruses in the fetus and newborn gut. I sent her that information to
look at. Now that her baby is nursing again I plan on keeping tabs on
her weight.
Thank you in advance,
Terri Klein RN, CLE, CLC
