I like to teach the cross cradle to new moms as a "latch-on technique", not
really a "nursing position". After we have achieved an asymmetric latch
using the cross cradle, I have mom slowly move her arms back into the more
traditional cradle hold for the remainder of the feeding. This way as she
becomes more adept at holding/feeding her baby and baby has learned what to
do, it is easier for them to transition to using the cradle hold. I often
explain this method of latching is mainly for those really early days when
both mom and baby are learning what works best.
