It is interesting that this committee and the IOM use the word "novel" for
the ingredients that are now being added to infant formula. The biotech
definition of novel ingredient is something never before eaten by people and includes
genetically engineered foods. Genetic engineering isn't a hard word to
pronounce or spell, except in the USA.

The chair of the committee is Dr. Richard Deckelbaum, who has been funded by
the Dairy & Meat Industry and an invited lecturer for Nestle. Thus, one
might say that the fox is guarding the henhouse. I would like to suggest to this
Committee that there is a simple way to get around time-consuming committee
evaluations of these new ingredients. A label on a can of infant formula
woould be a simple answer to the problem of regulation. The label would be,
"Genetically Modified Organisms, ingest at your own risk."
