Nestle USA, Inc. announced today
that an agreement has been signed with Del Monte Corporation which will
purchase the Contadina brand of canned tomato products and certain related
product lines as well as the Contadina tomato processing facilities located
in
Hanford and Woodland, both in California.  Nestle USA, however, will continue
to produce and market the Contadina(R) dalla Casa Buitoni(TM) brand of
refrigerated pastas and sauces and certain related product lines.  The
terms of the agreement with Del Monte Corporation were not disclosed and the
sale is subject to regulatory approval.
          After extensive evaluation of this particular area of the food
category,
Nestle USA has determined that its future opportunities for long-term
profitable growth will be greater in other sectors of the food and beverage
categories in which it competes.
