Lesley asks about BFHI in paediatric units, and requirements about not
accepting free supplies of formula.
In Australia, the National Steering Group (NSG) [disbanded as of June 1995]
of the BFHI set up a subcommittee to look at a "Baby Friendly Paediatric
Unit". They came up with "11 Steps to Optimal Breastfeeding in the
Paediatric Unit".
Under Step 5: "Give breastfed children other food or drink only when
age-appropriate or medically indicated....
Point 5.5 Are any breastmilk substitutes (including specialised formulas)
used in the facility purchased in the same way as other foods or medicines?
Yes  No
Point 5.6 Do health facility and all health care workers refuse free or low
cost* supplies of breastmilk substitutes, but pay close to market price? Yes No
*Low-cost defined as being less than 80% of the wholesale price..."

The 11 steps to a Baby Friendly Paediatric Unit were accepted by the
Australian NSG  in April 1994, and forwarded to UNICEF Australia, UNICEF New
