Carolyn Lawlor-Smith posted about a case report of infants who stopped
breathing but (as I understood it) failed to alert or struggle when large
breasts occluded airways. These babies may have underlying problems. I have
an article at my office and will ref. it later today and re-post, but I
recall it saying that some infants were identified who did not struggle when
their airways were occluded. This strange behavior was felt to indicate some
problem with their rousal systems which made them at high risk for SIDS. The
issue of what is blocking the airways (breasts or blankets) is a red herring.
I hope the article did not demonize large breasts or "unresponsive" mothers
who were to blame for trying to breastfeed when the real issue is babies with
abnormal signs.
