So sorry to question this Dr. Jack, but personally have a friend with babies
(now 6 and 5+) who reflecting on their birth stats and dates of birth, Baby
number 2 absolutely had to have been conceived week 2-4 postpartum baby number
1. Are you perhaps referring to lactating women only? This mother was a teen
mom so "strongly discouraged" from breastfeeding (I wasn't even a mother-
wanna-be at this point so don't know all the ins and outs of this thought
process). Anyway, as used to be common practice here in the beautiful Magnolia
State, she left the hospital after birth #2 with Norplant! MS Medicaid not
willing to pay for a birth every year for this "still legally a minor" but
married woman/girl. While we prefer not to have everyone else think we are so
backwards that this type of thing happens all the time n Mississippi, I am
afraid it still happens too frequently, n spite of all the family planning
education available. So, I am still fighting the depo issue at my clinics, but
able to see both sides of this issue. Should we encourage these moms..the
ones who blatantly tell you hey will not practice family planning
regularly...not to breastfeed at all, or should we encourage and support them
whilst they breastfeed as long as they can post depo....some f them manage
successfully?
Are these very fertile teenagers just a LOT more sexually active than we
thought, or can they possibly just be a LOT more fertile than previously
believed?
Maybe a little off-subject...since II believe you were originally discussing a
mature (or at least legal adult) mom who was willing to practice other forms
of family planning, but I thought I'd clue you in to common practice and where
it came from ...here in the "buckle of the Bible Belt"
