Just a quick note to all of you breastfeeding advocates regarding the subject
of Miriam Labbok being nominated as Surgeon General---

In August of 1995, the National Alliance for Breastfeeding Advocacy (NABA)
submitted Miriam's name to the White House to be considered for nomination to
the post of surgeon general. Because the post has not been funded by Congress
and some names that have come forth were dropped, the post is still open. Our
latest information is that some sources do not think there will be a surgeon
general position. Other of our contacts in Washington have helped NABA create
a plan of steps to take to encourage the Clinton administration to both keep
the position and consider Miriam as a candidate. Based on this advice, NABA
has re-submitted Miriam's name to the White House and has secured several key
letters of support. At this point in time we are waiting for word of where
the administration is on retaining this post.

While we appreciate everyone's enthusiam and willingness to write letters,
they will not do much good at this time. The first thing that needs to be
done is to secure support from diverse organizations for both the post and
for Miriam. Anyone wishing a copy of Miriam's cv can secure a copy from
either myself or Barbara Heiser. The grass roots support comes later as the
nomination goes to committee. It is like a protocol for advocacy!! Those of
you who are new to this list and wish more background can search the archives
for when NABA first discussed this issue. We will post any new information as
soon as we get it. All of you will be the first to know anything!!

If you have any questions or wish to talk to either Barbara or myself, please
feel free to call, write, fax, or e-mail!!
