Dear Lactnet Friends:

I worked with a mother of many that had this issue. The only possible
barrier was her use of the pacifier. She stopped using one with the baby
she consulted me for and had her supply falter at 5 months instead of 3 or
4.

Still a mystery!

The ideal care plan would include: n unmedicated spontaneous labor and
delivery, immediate s2s until the first breastfeeds, unlimited access by
the newborn to the breast for unrestricted feeding, baby wearing, and safe
bed-sharing to promote maximal nursing. No hormonal birth control, no
pacifiers.

For this mother, that would also mean several weeks of help in the home to
tend to the other children and the house so that she could do these things.

Newborns, when left to their own devices, will breastfeed more like 20
times a day. New mothers in the US are told 8-12 times to sell the idea;
newborns are thinking placenta when it comes to feeding.

warmly,
