Kathleen, your email example is just one of many very typical child training
programs that we Americans love so. Some of this information has a bit of
value -- I mean some parents are clueless that they can gently guide their
older babies or create organization and rhythm to their days. Yet, it
discourages me greatly that this kind of information is so prolific and that
moms and dads seem to LOVE this kind of scheduling and parent-led behavioral
information. Is it because mothering is not valued in our culture or is it
because too many parents have become more and more self centered and want
only what is best for themselves? Or both? I feel like I am spitting in the
wind most days. I see this kind of "best for parent" parenting as also why
so many women won't breastfeed, or want to do half and half, or give lots of
"relief" bottles. The other aspect of this type of parenting is that these
parents don't seem to enjoy or even understand their children as much as
attachment style parents do.

Sighing greatly, Kathy Eng, BSW, IBCLC
