It is probably confusing to counsellors who are not familiar with Jewish law 
but in fact each sect has different laws and also traditions which are often 
interpreted differently between different heads of those sects.  The modern 
Orthodox mother would probably be advised by her rabbi that she should not 
waste the milk pumped on the Sabbath, particularly if her supply is low and 
her baby needs every drop that she has.
I too respect the beliefs of the ultra-orthodox but am not comfortable with 
the fact that each rabbi can say something different.  Saving a life takes 
priority I believe in all the different denominations.
Of course it is ideal if the mother can pump sufficient milk on Friday to 
supply her baby on the Sabbath.
