In response to Barbara Wilson Clay's position & goals for moms who want to
B/B feed: I couldn't agree w/you more! For our in patient population, it
almost seems that there are more moms that are combining breast feeding with
bottles now more than ever. I've spoken to other L/C's & this really goes
"against their grain." But the most important outcome is a thriving family
unit & as nurses (first & foremost) we need to advocate for the patients.
They have to feel comfortable with the decisions they make so that above all,
they can be the best parents that they can be. Indeed, this does contradict
the optimum breastfeeding situation but we have got to support these clients.
I feel that we need to come up with more strategies to help these moms so
they can maximize the benefits of b/f for baby & Mom instead of ignoring the
problem. Barbara, thank you for breaking ground on this subject. I actually
wasn't brave enough to. It can be a tough position for an L/C. One final note
re: introduction of bottles. I've seen response to bottles, finger feeds,
supplemental nursers vary widely from baby to baby, simply because they are
individuals & really do know what they want. But often times their goals
don't match those of their parents. Again, support, love & trust & (sometimes
acceptance) are really the tools of a healthy relationship. I adore & promote
breastfeeding whenever I can, but in my heart I'm still a nurse too. Jeanne
