Hi on this nice day here in South Florida,
Winnie's last line in her posting on sneezing made my day. Sometimes a
sneeze is just a sneeze. As a postpartum nurse who works mostly in the trenchs
helping those nervous moms and dads and grandmothers, I hear all too often "the
baby sneezed! He must be allergic(or have a cold)". Hiccoughs evoke even more
frantic responses especially in my Hispanic population. Never ever remove a
small bit of string that looks like it fell on the baby's forehead...its there
to prevent hiccoughs.
Common sense seems to have fallen out with the placenta. Sneezes are often
just that clearing the airway or reacting to the flowers and lilies especially
those horrible pink ones or all the perfume the mom or grandmothers or visitors
insist on dowsing themselves in...or the violetta that you have to warn them
about...or the over feeding 30min/30min at the breast and followed with 2 oz
of formula because the baby keeps sucking...Culture Diversity is wonderful but
no one ever suspects that the baby could be stressed...in many instances it
could be or it could just be a sneeze or a hiccough and getting use to a new
enviroment. Back to the lilies and the trenches tomorrow.
Happily celebrating my 57 th birthday today.
