My client with the nipple fissure told me this afternoon that she
wants to wean and is giving it 24 more hours and then that is it.
She was in tears of course and I couldn't really get the gist of why
she really wants to wean, she just said it is all to much, the pain
(on a scale of 0-10, she rates as a 3) is not improving and her baby
today is feeding 2 hourly (normally 3 hourly). The baby is now 6
weeks old, I am sure that it is highly likely that is in a growth
spurt and she is not coping well. Anyway, I did suggest a few things,
like: antifungals, breast shells, rest the nipple for 24 hours, have
a complete break for a day and then try again. I left her with all
that and said I would see her tomorrow. She did say that she feels
so guilty that she wants to wean and that everyone will judge her
(she is a nurse), hopefully she will hang in there just a little
longer and hopefully one suggestion will hit the jackpot.
