Dear wise women,
On the subject of pregnant women with rare conditions, my 34 yo pregnant daughter has LPLD: Lipoprotein lipase deficiency (1 in 1 million or roughly 150 women in the US) Her body does not produce this enzyme which is necessary to digest fats. Symptoms include pancreatitis and that's how she was diagnosed after three bouts of pancreatitis at age 10. With a very, very strict diet of 15 g of fat per day, her condition has been controlled these past 24 years. According to research on women who have breastfed with LPLD, her breast milk will contain low amounts of longchain fatty acid's and high amounts of medium chain fatty acids.
There is one line in Ruth Lawrence's old textbook that says women with hyper lipidemia have milk which contains "a bizarre composition of fats" and therefore breastfeeding is contra indicated. Is it not possible to add long chain fatty acids to her baby's diet if necessary?
Her high risk OB, genetic and lipid specialists are following her closely during the pregnancy,
but I fear that they will not be as interested in whether she breasfeeds or not.
All suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
