Sue Jacoby stated:

"Were they? Or was this a sham? As lactation consultants, I doubt many
of us would have any problem Feeding the Baby, if the baby was indeed in
need of calories, STAT. Would we take Feed the Baby action at 5%? Highly
unlikely. At 10%? Probably not, unless we would see lethargy, etc. So
how can this excuse so blithely be accepted as appropriate- "the babies
were losing a lot of weight." No, they were not. I want to know why that
belief is allowed to sit out there so unchallenged. Or, was that part of
the purpose of the "study" in the first place? Define the terms and win
the war?"

*I couldn't agree more. Numbers can deceive us all the time. How do we
know these 5% babies weren't just having huge mec stools on the first day?
Mom's precious colostrum stlll in small amounts as it is supposed to be, so
weight gain not happening yet of course. We need to teach moms that
frequent feeds are the norm so they don't be come "disillusioned" and give
up. We need to stop comparing breastfeeding to bottle feeding, where babe
is given huge amounts of formula and is supposed to be quiet for 3 or more
hours. The problem is many mothers don't know what is normal, it's up to
us LC's to reassure moms that frequent feeds are normal. I have also seen
very healhty babies not quite gain their birth weight by two weeks,
sometimes longer, but there was no need to supplement, they looked great.
Who makes up these rules anyway? How about we look at the whole picture?
