Congratulations June!
You may be a little like me, a little scared working in the new role
of LC. For me that was 1997. I always told myself to go over the basics
with any mother having pain/problems. I do know optimum latch, swallow
assessment, satiety assessment, positioning. If puzzled, I could leave a
mom's bedside to look something up in a textbook or call a colleague.
Every now and then I'll read from a text to a mother either on the
phone or in the office, about something such as Raynaud's of the nipple
that I don't see very often. Or read from Hale about a med. I don't
know it all, can't even come close.
Work from what you know, and more knowledge comes with experience,
cont. ed, colaboration.
Now to throw you off balance again, a recent Leaven article stated
that half of what we think we know in medicine will be proved wrong in
ten years. So let's not hang on too tightly to what we think we know!
Best Wishes! I hope you love working with breastfeeding as much as
I do!
