I, too, recommend and have had a lot of success with relieving 
engorgement by expressing enough to be comfortable ... not expressing 
out ... just for comfort. This can be repeated as frequently as the 
mother needs to, to maintain comfort. It doesn't increase milk supply 
because at this time the prolactin levels are sky-high anyway and 
autocrine control isn't fine-tuned yet. And it does prevent the 
possibility of engorgement causing involution.
I am only talking about lactogenesis II here. If the baby is 
breastfeeding well then I wouldn't recommend expressing beyond the 
initial day or two when the milk comes in ... and then only for the 
mothers who become uncomfortably full.
