Jennifer,
I would definately explore her reasons for not wanting to breastfeed
directly. However, maybe when her baby is born she will feel differently. Is
she a young mother? I had my son at 19 and was not entirely comfortable with
the idea of breastfeeding as no one I had known at the time had ever breastfed a
child. I was only exposed to formula feeding. I read every article I could
find on the subject. As my pregnancy progressed I became dedicated to
breastfeeding. My son is now 28 months and still going strong. He was an
exclusively breastfed baby. Maybe providing her with lots of literature on
breastfeeding might make her more open to the idea.
I guess this is a fairly common situation because I have a cousin who
solely relies on pumping to feed her baby. She now wishes she had tried harder
to get baby to latch on. I have tried helping her with latch on, but she does
not seem to want to put forth the effort.
