I chuckle (even though it is not so funny) when I hear about people
sticking object in their children to make them make a stool. It seems to
be very common in this country, and I have heard more than one doctor
recommend it. Another one is tomato juice to a week old baby.
Many times I find these mothers have one calm kid at home who never
"demanded" anything, and when we discuss how there are different
personalities in the world, etc. they usually rethink exactly how much
they are crying and realize they are usually calm when eating or being
held. We change the vocabulary to high need. I usually mention one of my
daughters who was never settled, never slept (even from day 1- maybe anour
a day- but not all at once!) and today at 6 she surely still nedds about
half the sleep that I do, only goes to bed when forced, and then will lay
in bed for a few hours before really nodding off. I remind them they have
a human being and not a cabbage patch doll like I use to demonstrate. Most
of the time, this puts things in perspective. Obviously if weight gain
and all else comes out normal.
