In the mother-baby unit of the hospital from which I
recently resigned, it is still common for nurses to
bind the breats of women who will not be breastfeeding
for whatever reason (fetal demise, HIV+, or just don't
want to). And yes, a wide ace bandage is used. The
doctors order it and the nurses do it. The mothers are
told not to stimulate their breasts in any way - even
just to reduce uncomfortable fullness and prevent
engorgement. I tried to educate the moms I cared for
in proper breast care, but educating the nurses, NA's
and docs is an uphill battle.
