I do not teach about plugged ducts, mastitis, or even returning to work. I
focus on the first couple of days. What's the point of all that other
stuff, it may never occur, especially if the mother does not establish bf
in the early days. I will take questions about that, but just with a brief
answer and what resources are available when / if that occurs (call our
dept).
I do focus on STS, what to do if baby is sick or too sleepy to establish bf
(express by hand, later by pump). What the resources are. I do mention
things that could be risk factors that should be shared with the lactation
consultant (breast surgery, e.g.).
Personally, I do not use slides, but just talk in an informal manner, and
show a nice video like breast crawl or biologic nurturing or something
similar.
