Hi, I am midwife in NZ and we have a 'situation' that needs help.

HX: 33 years old, have been bf for the last 4 years non-stop and tandem feeding for almost 3 of those. Have a 4 year old, a 2yrs9mo old and a 10 month old. The youngest two are still feeding frequently and the baby is not even remotely interested in food.

Diagnosed with breast cancer, having surgery - hopefully not mastectomy - end of July and looking to start chemo end of August. We think we will be able to get donor milk from friends etc and of course are expressing. Obviously not getting a lot as it is in high demand!

At this point the idea of weaning is more heartbreaking than the cancer itself so we have started thinking outside the box. The surgeon is not keen - yet - on reconstruction before chemo as it will delay therapy but this may be an option with a lact-aid.

We also were thinking about using a lact-aid and a nipple shield without holes, but not sure how to deal with the milk that will come from the breast?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, time is ticking away for us here....

Jaynie
