Our hospital policy states that mothers with breastfeeding babies may
have their babies come in to breastfeed or room in as long as there is
another adult present to care for the baby (after all mom is readmitted
because she is ill). If mother elects not to have baby, hospital
provides breast pump and ice in a cooler for milk storage, does not
store milk in community refrigerator. Family is responsible for
containers and transport. If a mother is admitted to hospital without
baby, hospital provides pump within 4 hours of last feed. If mother is
admitted for outpatient surgery, baby may be with mom in pre-admission
area and in post-recovery area or pump provided.

Subject: Readmission of breastfeeding mothers
Do any of the hospital lactation consultants on lactnet have policies or
procedures governing the readmission of breastfeeding moms in their
hospitals? Not just immediate postpartum but as long as mom is
breastfeeding and has to be hospitalized. If any of you can share your
ideas on how this is handled in your hospital I would greatly appreciate
it.
