Good morning Winnie: In my experience, milk blisters are closely linked
with an obstruction or milk plug of some sort...A careful history with
the mother often reveals a period of time with poor nursing, ie
baby(ies) sleeping tooo long, a christening party, etc. and breasts
were not drained as usual. Pricking the blister is a temporary solution.
Warm (NOT HOT) wet compresses to the nipple help. Frequent nursing,
careful positioning, sometimes additional pumping to completely drain
the breast and remove the obstruction is essential. Observation for
mastitis is important as the original problem, the 'plug" is not treated
with the pricking. Mother must be patient as it may take several
feedings to resolve. Pain medication may be indicated as the nipple is
SOOO tender. Best wishes and let us know how things work out.
