Yes, "high cost" of formula was mentioned. Day 1 also stressed - a
formula fed baby was more likely to get diarrheal disease &/or pneumonia
(was it?), & these diseases were just as bad as HIV in a 3rd world country.
The report did speak of 1/3 of babies getting HIV (I believe Dr. Ruth has
quoted the risk of dying from malnutrition, etc. was around 50% - wish that
could have been in the NPR report).
Another post asked about moms bfing so that people don't suspect they are
HIV+. This was discussed on Day 1. The report also said, women who do not
bfeed are suspected of being unfaithful to their husbands. Wow -- what if
that became the societal norm everywhere?
Today's report focused on the live virus being in the milk and being given
to the baby 10-15x per day through breastfeeding, as well as chances for
baby to be infected during a bloody birth, and still 2/3 never become
infected. It was clear that we don't have all the answers and that
breastfeeding will continue and the researchers are looking for ways to
make breastfeeding safer, not ways to get more formula.
Day 1 said women need to learn how to protect themselves. Why didn't they
also say men need to learn XYZ? How can a woman in reality have safe sex
when she is trying to get pregnant? (retorical question)
Here's hoping the Vitamin A helps and leads to other solutions.
