What a can of worm! I don't want to equate our discussion on NON RN LCs to
that of "non Certified" LCs. Certainly this is a bit of a different issue.
Many hospitals are content to "use" their RNs as breastfeeding specialists
without the IBCLC whether or not they ever intend to get the credential.
Perhaps they feel that a RN "knows" what they are doing? RN is a licensure;
however IBCLC is a credential. I have met my share of new IBCLCs who ask many
questions and don't have the "gut instinct" and years of experience that some
IBCLCs (Non RN's) have. But hospitals like to protect themselves legally. Our
Risk Mgmt dept is more than happy with my level of knowledge and expertise.
The non credentialed issue is a sticky wicket indeed.
