Diane,

As babies, my children were always at the upper percentile. Two of them
tripled their birthweight(7 1/2 and 8 lbs) by 5to 6 months. People would
always comment on my son--good comments, such as "Look at those hamhocks!" When
my mother-in-law would be with me, she would beam and comment that its
"mother's milk!" My babies plateaued in weight at this point. One doctor told me
to start solids to slow weight gain! Of course, I didn't.

I tell moms that the fat put down from breastmilk is different from that of
formula. That once the baby starts crawling and walking, the fat will be
burnt off and when their babies become toddlers, they will be worried they are not
eating enough due to so much activity. Isn't it amazing how much we fret
over weight--baby gaining too slow, baby gaining too fast!

I do not know if it is different for a baby who receives much of her
breastmilk from a bottle. Does this change things as they are not in control of the
comsumption?

Aloha,
Gloria Thai
