Hi Ilene
Look into having your hospital get Baby-Friendly designation (WHO initiative
here in the US). It involves extensive staff education and training. It will
get all your staff nurses on the same healthy, evidenced based page! That's
what the breastfeeding moms need in a hospital - evidenced based practice.
It's hospital practices that have been found to really sabotage
breastfeeding. Cleaning up the hospital practices can really help moms and
babies get off to a healthy start. The hospital I work in did such staff
education and training, are on the cusp of Baby-Friendly designation, and
our exclusive breastfeeding rates jumped 20% over the two year training
period. Get the staff up to speed and do less head-banging!
