We have two groups who are very large and these Peds want the babies in the
nursery waiting for them when they arrive. The nurses are pretty good about
getting babies right back out to the moms. We have some parents who follow the
babies and they can comfort them in the nursery until the Dr. is done with
their baby. Most of our smaller groups of Peds go to the room and do the
assessment. Our Neonatology group also goes to the parents room. Most physicians
CAN be trained to do bedside assessments. Afterall isn't that what they are
doing in the office? Our biggest issue is the night staff constantly NOT getting
it and encouraging moms to be separated from their babies, against our policy
I might add. And with the new Mother-Baby manager who is clueless I can only
imagine how this isn't going to improve much. It takes education on the moms
part. We spend time discussing this along with our bedside consults.
