For both my kids I exclusively BF and got my period early.  The first child
nursed every 2 hrs throughout his infancy and period returned at 5 mos.  The
second child co-sleeps and nurses several times at night, eats very little
solids, does not suck pacifier or fingers and period returned at 9 mos.  The
periods were/are irregular at first.  By the way, I am a skinny < 100 lbs,
age 38.  I have had moms who wanted to/did wean a toddler because they were
amenorrheic and could not achieve next pg until weaning.
So, yes, there is WIDE variation.
