Dear Lanell,
The size of the areola is prob. insignificant. The small, flat nipple and
the full breasts are prob. more closely related to why this small baby can't
latch. Try pumping the breasts to pull out the nipple and get more
elasticity to the tissue. Maybe a newborn small size nipple shield will
assist, but only if baby is well positioned with chin jammed in and nose
tipped back from breast. You may need to give baby a jump-start with some
pumped milk because by now there is prob. an association that the breast
doesn't work very well, and baby may be aversive.
