I recall after my daughter had her tonsils out (and I faintly recall giving this instruction to parents when they were being discharged from the hospital after tonsillectomies, years ago) that sucking from a straw was prohibited because it elicited enough pressure on the surgical site that it could dislodge the clot.  Don't know how those pressures would compare with the ones when suckling at the breast. I would think suckling at the breast would elicit significantly less pressure than sucking from a straw though.   Sally Myer RN
