Over the last year or so I have several women tell me that they were
going to wean by a year because they wanted to become pregnant again.
These are all older (38-40) first time mothers. They delay solids until
6 months but then want to wean fairly quickly because of ticking
biological clocks. I do know women of this age who conceived quickly and
those for whom weaning did not help and never were able to have another
baby. Does anyone know more? Are there any techniques and practices
that would help these women? I generally suggest eliminating the middle
of the night feedings and increasing the amount of solids while
continuing to maintain a breastfeeding relationship. This isn't enough
for all and they want to do more. We seem to have done a little too well
on breastfeeding as a contraceptive!
