I've noticed a run lately in the situation of "mom has a fever" of unknown
origin - either during labor or after delivery (hmmm, c/s? epidural?) and baby
is sent to NICU to r/o sepsis. We've had lots of ambiguity and no real
consistency on whether or not baby "can" get the pumped colostrum. Last week a
situation arose, the neos said OK and I ran interference so baby got milk. This week
it happened on a Sunday, the NICU nurse told mom "No" so she was only pumping
"occasionally" and was engorged when I saw her. Mom was told every bad line in
the book and also had a defective valve on the pump kit so was getting poor
suction. (have never seen this in 20 years of using pumps) I may have lost her
a little with my determined sharing of information but I tried.
I'm trying to dig for information in the various resources that I have. Can
anyone point me in the right direction? I spent quite some time looking through
Lawrence, the BAB and other sources. Red Book AAP? Guidelines for Perinatal
Care? ABM?
Thanks in advance,
