I'm still catching up on Lactnet posts and there was one a while back that
talked about Avent bottles versus Haberman bottles - that Haberman bottles
were compression only and Avent bottles were suction only. I'm curious
about the actual research done on various bottles. To me it doesn't make
sense that the Avent would be suction only because when I observe newborns
on the Avent, most seem to be flooded with milk on this bottle. My
impression is that it just flows right in without even having to use
suction. Could it be that using Dee Kassing's method of bottle feeding,
babies must use suction on the Avent, but in a more reclined position they
don't?

Also there was a MUCH earlier about how there was some evidence that the
motion of the tongue on the Haberman bottle is not like that on the breast.

So, now I want a comprehensive study on bottles that shows O2 saturation
rates with different bottles, with different positions (ie Dee Kassing's
paced bottle feeding) and then the internal videotapes of what is actually
going on with the tongue during the feeding.

I know that CDC wants a comprehensive study of PROGRAMS, but it seems to me
there are still many details in the black box of how we do our work that
could also use funding. There was an excellent review of the programs done
by Cynthia Green called "Improving Breastfeeding Behaviors: Evidence fro m
Two Decades of Intervention Research" published by the LINKAGES program
that would be of great help for anyone who wants to apply for the CDC call
for proposals.

Best, Susan
