Dear Lactnet Educators,

My post about the parenting classes has generated a lot of interest so I
thought I would post more information. The parenting programs I
mentioned can be found in the Active Parenting Publishers Resource Guide
1999 at:

OR write to:

I've used several of the programs from these publishers and I really
like their effort to incorporate families from different backgrounds.
Information is available for parenting issues revolving around divorced,
single, co-parenting, multi-generational, Christian parenting,
multi-cultural and adolescent issues. The "1-2-3-4- Parents" is
very effective for high-risk (teen, single) parents.

If you get the catalogue, you might see other alternatives for
non-high-risk parents. The first one that comes to mind is Active
Parenting Today for kids ages 2 - teens, or STEP (Systematic Training
for Effective Parenting based on Dinkmeyer & Dinkmeyer's research of
parent-child interactions.) STEP is more for early childhood, birth to
age 5 or 6.

Most of the programs are designed for a series, but can be very
effective for a one-time class and the programs usually include
a Leader's guide, interactive video and offers easy-to-read parent's
workbooks, charts, and worksheets for home practice.

Many of the programs focuses on real-life situations and promotes
re-direction, distraction, building up self-esteem and positive
parenting styles. *BUT* unfortunately, breastfeeding is not really
emphasized. Still, the techniques are worth looking at.

It's a bit pricey, the "standard" kit is $199.00 US and comes in a
spanish version as well for the same price.

Just for the record, I do not own stock, nor am I an employee of Active
Parenting or any of the parenting programs mentioned. I'm just passing
on information.

Happy Parenting!

Best regards,
