Sallie: In the hospital for our staff nurses & support staff of all OB
areas & NICU we have a yearly reqired one day update with appropriate
competencies. For bfing we have 4 areas taught:
Assessment of a feeding (using a LATCH score)
Discharge teaching
Use of a breast pump
Use of alternate feeding methods - cup, finger, SNS
They must attend this at least once/year, satisfactorily complete the post
test, and at some point after the course, they must seek one of the IBCLC's
to observe the actual assessment/teaching/demo with patients in all 4 areas.
Good luck with your endeavor!
