<In my state there are some WIC PCs who have advanced to get their IBCLC. But the

basic reqmt to hold that position is a degree or certification in Nutrition. I
dont have that. My IBCLC is not enough to qualify to become a WIC Peer
Counselor.

So very different from my state which requires WIC PCs to be paraprofessionals
defined by our state WIC BF Coordinator as no more than 2 years post high school
education. For the PCs in my state a person holding an undergraduate degree or
higher would be considered over-qualified in most circumstances (they make
exceptions on occasion). I've never heard of a requirement of a degree in Nutrition to become a PC. The reason behind the
'paraprofessional' definition is that there comes a junction where the 'peer' component is seemingly diluted when you examine the general demographic of women and children
receiving WIC services.

According to the scope of practice the PCs I supervise work under they do not
perform evaluations or assessments and their work is not considered 'clinical'.
Their work is more focused on counseling, support, referrals, and basic
education.
