Mary asked about hospital priviledges for those LCs who are not hospital
employees.

Before I moved my private practice to a hospital setting, I had visiting
priviledges at the hospital where I now work. I saw inpatients when called
to do so by a physician or the staff nurse. I charted the visit under
physician notes the same place we chart now (except that now the IBCLCs have
a separate form in that section), and I billed the patient directly for my
time and product.

You made reference in your post to RN/IBCLC regarding this question. Do
note that my specialty is breastfeeding and human lactation. Nursing is
neither here nor there in the delivering of this service. My being an IBCLC
rather than an RN made no difference in the granting of visiting
priviledges. My presentation to administration and my knowledge and
experience in the field of lactation had everything to do with it. It is
important to note that IBCLC is a stand alone creditial and not an add-on to RN.

Good luck with your work.
