Greetings!

The following article is the focus of our next journal club:

Shelly Kreiter et al. Nutritional rickets in African American
breast-fed infants. Journal of Pediatrics August 2000;137:153-7.
There is an editorial in the same issue on pages 143-5 (Welch et al.).

On Oct 15th or 16th, I will post a summary of the article on Lactnet.
In the interim, one is encouraged to critically read and digest the
article and the accompanying editorial.

When reviewing the article and editorial consider the following
issues/principles (this is NOT a comprehensive list):

aim/hyposthesis
study design and methods (data collection and analysis)
results
conclusions
strengths and weaknesses of the study
impact upon one's clinical practice
future areas and methods of study

The article, like any other will also be discussed in the context of
the relevant physiology and biochemistry as well as other
similar published studies.

We look forward to a stimulating discussion (BEGINNING OCTOBER 16TH).
Please REFRAIN from commenting on the article UNTIL the summary is
posted on Lactnet. This is the signal, for all who are interested, to
begin the discussion.

Your colleague,

Danny Hirsch, MD, FAAP, CLC
