Hi Jacquie :)

Yes, we are all pulling out our hair here, thinking about the travesty of
Nestle teaching breastfeeding. Talk about putting the wolf to guard the
chickens!

You asked: "What about the Code and manufacturers not having access to
pregnant and nursing women?"

Unfortunately, the US government has not yet ratified the WHO Code because
of pressure from the formula companies, so that one does not fly. It is
shameful that the richest country in the world should have so little care
for its most vulnerable and helpless citizens.

Today I exhibited at a WIC baby shower for pregnant mothers, sharing
breastfeeding information on behalf of Breastfeeding USA. When I returned
home, I read that funding for the federal WIC program is being cut,
endangering their highly successful Peer Counseling Program. This makes me
so angry. WIC Peer Counselors are paid a pittance, yet they give their all
to help other mothers. Our priorities are truly screwed up.

Subject: Research project re Newark project

Lateral thinking. The mayor of Newark is not about to see the light, let’s
face it. However this made me think:

“Nestle offered ...$100,000.00 and a free 2 year (minimum) program, .... to
educate about breastfeeding and nutrition in all 15 of the Family Success
Centers. Nestle plans to provide their own bilingual nutritionists. In
their curriculum, nutritionists, are told breast is best but they do not
receive information on how to manage breastfeeding. Nestle hires these
brand new nutrition grads, tells them breast is best "but" and then quickly
goes on to elaborate on the "buts"...

Wouldn’t it be interesting if someone in the lactation world decided to
make a documentary of the programme for mothers and people could analyse it
to show how counter productive is formula company help for breastfeeding
promotion? Or if volunteers signed up to monitor the courses, or collate
the results of the “success centres”. More brainstorming?

[I am still open-jawed. What about the Code and manufacturers not having
access to pregnant and nursing women? It’s like putting paedophiles in
charge of school children.]

Best wishes
Jacquie
