I'm going to add my n=1 worth here. My baby (10weeks) clicks at every
feeding and it's always more when she's tired and needs to sleep. She has a
high palate and I believe quite a short superior labial frenulum so latching
has to be good. Coupled with this she has to deal with a strong MER. I did
go to a professional as I kept getting mastitis (non-infectious) and needed
someone to help with the last cm or so. Since I saw a LC (when she was
around 4 weeks) I have never had any more mastitis and she drains a breast
really effectively (you know to the floppyness that you neighbour thinks is
what you will end up with if you breastfeed too long!). Her weight gain was
more than adequate in the first 7 weeks (i.e. +250g/week), not sure what it
is now. She is not 'gassy' and has never had one of those green foamy
stools. I sure she lets in air during feeding, but is able to deal with it
without problems (provides no end of amusement for her brothers though). But
she still clicks.
What I have learnt, at least for my baby, is that clicking isn't necessarily
a problem. I found it hard to accept that clicking was ok for us, you read
so much about why clicking is a problem and nothing about when it might be
acceptable. And accepting it can be hard. What it has also taught me is that
you need to look very objectively at a nursing diad to see where the problem
lies (if there is a problem).
