Kathy, It's my understanding that the diaphragm that sits at the end of
the tubing is the barrier. I may be wrong. Lois

PS: I have not seen any kind of barrier on the Symphony tubing so I am 
interested in knowing if they have a new system?? I am seeing the ones 
moms bring home from the hospital and the tubing is always wet at the 
flange, going up about 2-3 inches. Sometimes mom has not used this 
tubing in 12 hours and it still looks wet.
