At a recent Nursing Mothers meeting we had a pediatric dentist who
discussed this. She mentioned that this does not happen with breastfed
babies IF the babies swallow after eating. If no swallowing happens then
she said the milk COULD pool behind the teeth and cause bottle mouth in a
breastfed baby. She recommended NOT sleeping with the baby latched on the
whole night, but to have separate, discreet feeds even in a family bed.
She said there was no need to WAKE a sleeping baby after a feed, just
jiggle ever so slightly so a reflexive swallow takes place.
